“The 2008 PTA Book and Gift Fair was a great success. This year we had, 8 Book Stalls, 5 Charity stalls and over 25 vendors attending so there was plenty to look at and choose from.
Thank you to Jill and Reepa and all the Parent volunteers who worked so hard to make it such a wonderful and successful event.
Thanks also to the Music Department and Students that complemented this event. Parent and vendors commented on how impressed they were with the standard of musical talent on show.
We are still awaiting a final fundraising figure, as soon as we have one we will let you know.
Thank you also to our Sponsors –
KC Dat www.kcdat.com.sg provided our shopping bags.
Prestat Fine Chocolates www.prestat.com.sg provided delicious mince pies to complement the home made ones provided by parents.
We hope you and your children enjoyed the event!”

PTA Quiz Night – Friday, 1st February – 7pm to 11pm
I am very pleased to report that the PTA Quiz Night was an absolutely brilliant evening and our thanks go to everybody who attended, all our helpers before, during and after the evening and to our sponsors: Chutney Café, Kingfisher Beer, Shang Antiques and Swarovski.
|
A record breaking 35 teams took part in 15 rounds of questions including picture rounds of famous personalities, dingbats, haircuts and airline codes. The question rounds included Art and Literature, Sports by Numbers and Car Models. The competition was well fought with 265 points to play for and there were several teams who scored maximum points on various rounds. |
|
The eventual winners were The Paper Aeroplanes captained by Chris Allen! Well done to you all and thank you to Shang Antiques for providing the 5 antique wheels which looked very appropriately like over-sized gongs for our winners.
The losing team, just over 50 points behind the winners, were Fran’s Gang and they received prizes donated by Swarovski of crystal cockroaches and grasshoppers!!
|
|
The meal was devoured and obviously very much enjoyed by everybody and completely sponsored by our very generous sponsors Chutney Café – thank you again Rajul for your support and for getting sponsorship also from Kingfisher Beer who gave us over 50% of the beer for the night. |
|
We were quite taken aback by how much we had under-estimated the amount of wine that could be consumed by our teams for the evening and our thanks also go to Alison and Susan who abandoned their teams to make a urgent trip to buy emergency supplies of more wine! |
Many of the helpers on the night were non-Tanglin parents and they enjoyed the evening just as much as all the competitors! Our thanks to all the helpers including Junior and Senior School Students who helped set up for the event, all the PTA Committee, parents and students who helped before, during and after the event and to EBT Team, the GA’s and Gwen Sin our photographer – all working well after school hours and without whom no PTA Event could ever take place! |

PTA Christmas Event
Our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) held the School’s largest ever Family Fun Day on 16th June. The event brought together the entire School community and featured more than 40 stalls and activities, as well as a food and drinks tent, entertainment and an array of gift vendors. |
|
Congratulations to our PTA President Jacqui Nursey and the Family Fun Day Committee on a superbly organised fete, and we thank the major sponsors of the day, KC Dat, Audi, the Far East Organisation, BMW and Eastern Carpets. We also thank Singapore Airlines for sponsoring 2 air tickets from Singapore to Vietnam. Congratulations to Tanglin parent, Joanna Brill, on winning this grand prize. PTA IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT: CEILIDH |
The PTA in association with the Music Department arranged the first ever Ceilidh this year!
|
The event was a tremendous success, with tickets selling out and sadly some applicants unlucky in their bid to buy tickets. For those who came, what a wonderful evening was in store for them.
The evening was held in the Curran Hall, which was beautifully decorated with wall hangings in tartan and in green organza and with tropical heather-lookalike flower arrangements on each table! |
|
Two hundred guests, aged one year upwards, learnt how to reel (the youngest carried in arms) along to instructions given by Hazel Halliday from the St. Andrew’s Society who is probably used to teaching in reverse proportion complete novices to experienced dancers at St. Andrew Society functions. But she was completely successful in getting us all expert at Stripping the Willow, and dancing the Dashing White Sergeant and Eight some Reels along with many other dances. |
|
Huge thanks to Hazel who not only kept us dancing all night but also brought along her students to show us, during the dinner break, to what levels of expertise we can aspire! Thank you so much to all the dancers, some students in Tanglin but also many from other schools who came along and entertained us and made the evening so special! |
|
The guests were splendidly attired with many different tartans on display and so many kilts – I never realised just how many Scottish families there are in Tanglin – the kilts made the dancers look so bonny and colourful. |
|
We were entertained all night with wonderful music from the Ceilidh band who played
magnificently and tirelessly with musicians from both the teaching staff and students – they did us proud!
|
|
During the break for dinner, everybody’s appetite was well and truly catered for with a delicious
fish and chip supper with salad and apple pie and brownies for dessert. The food was first class, we were definitely served an outstanding feast by Mr. Hoe and his team. |
If this wasn’t enough to make the evening wonderful, our sponsors for the evening made it an absolutely fantastic success. Enormous thanks go to THE PUMP ROOM in Clarke Quay who donated all the beer for the evening, and to THE HIGHLANDER, QUAYSIDE SEAFOOD DINING and PEONY JADE CHINESE RESTAURANT – all also in Clarke Quay – who donated the very generous door prizes. |
|
At the end of the evening, the guests voted the evening a big success and called for a repeat of the event next year – so if you would like to join in the fun next year, do make sure you send in your ticket applications early, we can confidently predict that this event will be a sell-out again! |
WHITE TIE AND TIARA BALL
The PTA event of the year, the White Tie and Tiara Ball took place at the Shangri La Hotel Island Ballroom on Saturday, 24th March and was attended by over 400 guests.
|
|
The evening which opened with a cocktail reception sponsored by Diva Vodka was a huge success. Guests arrived to a beautifully decorated reception and ballroom with wall hangings of glamorous icons including Grace Kelly and Cary Grant and flower displays which highlighted the pink and black scheme from the publicity material by using black bamboo and pink anthuriums.
|
|
Diva Vodka bottles, which have Swarovski crystals encased inside the bottle, were magnificently showcased in a stunning ice sculpture in the centre of the Reception. |
While guests enjoyed the cocktails, one of which had been especially created for the Ball, students from the Senior School mingled with the guests to sell them balloons which when burst included a slip announcing the prize won by the lucky buyer. Throughout the Reception we were serenaded by the beautiful sound of the StringBellas String Quartet. |
|
Guests were ushered into the Ballroom and once everybody was seated and the PTA President had welcomed everybody and thanked all those responsible for the superb organisation which had made the Ball possible, we were entertained with an acrobatic and funky dance display by dancers and their teacher from the Colours of Dance, Centre Stage Arts School. |
|
A magnificent and delicious meal starting with home smoked salmon rillette with caviar and featuring Honey Roast Duck Breast as the main course was served and enjoyed by all and between courses the raffle prizes were drawn and lucky winners walked away with prizes including a one week stay in a holiday home at Lake Taupo, New Zealand and Philips 32” LCD Flat Screen TV. |
Dancing began to the music by the band Wat Da Funk and they soon had everybody dancing - the
dance floor was never empty from that point on. Between sessions, our DJ Raj continued to keep us on our feet until the early hours of Sunday morning.
Accolades including “the best ball ever” and “the best ball I have ever been to” keep flooding in this week – everybody without exception seemed to have had an excellent time. |
|
Of course, this is only possible with a brilliant team behind the scenes working hard for months to put everything together. Our thanks go to Ghislaine Taylor, as Ball Coordinator, and her team who are listed in the PTA Roll of Honour. |
IT’S A CHRISTMAS GOURMET NIGHT!
The PTA Christmas Gourmet event, a first of its kind in Tanglin, was held at GJ Hall and took place on Tuesday, 28th November 2006. Entitled “It’s a Christmas Gourmet”, the evening included many attractions such as a beautiful opening by the Tanglin Chamber Choir, a Fashion Show and an Auction, attended by an estimate of 240 guests. |
|
We had two main objectives in mind for this event: firstly, that everybody who attended would have a brilliant time so that this would become a regular Christmas celebration; secondly, this to be a big fund-raiser so that we could boost our efforts to contribute to the “Tanglin in the Community” fund.
We are really thrilled to announce that both objectives were well and truly met. The total amount that we are able to add to our fund-raising this term from this event is $18,000! |
Finger food provided by Original Sin and Sistina were served throughout the evening. Alana Estate, Bottles and Bottles, Cellar Door and Le Vigne also presented their wines for the guests to sample. Other companies that attended the event to showcase their Christmas products and also donated items to the auction and door prizes were Jason’s Market Place, The Butcher and Christopher Lim. |
|
The Fashion Show was definitely the highlight of the evening, with all the models surprising us by “strutting their stuff” on the catwalk. The ladies looked absolutely beautiful in the gowns by Glitterati and it was hard to believe that they were actually all our students! And what suave and handsome escorts they had – we were all thrilled to see such a fantastic show!
During the first part of the evening, guests could survey the wonderful items on offer and bid for them in a silent auction. There were the “Twelve Trees of Christmas” on offer and other fantastic items that included a weekend stay in the Presidential Suite at the Conrad Hotel; a BMW for the Weekend; a beautiful rug donated by Eastern Carpets; an exquisite piece of jewellery and a magnificent painting donated by the Kiridesa Art Gallery. |
|
The “Twelve Trees of Christmas” were laden with gifts donated by the Tanglin Community. Each tree had a theme: the Little Princess Tree or the Super Boy Tree; the Gourmet Tree or the Spa and Leisure Tree; the Teen Boy Tree or the Teen Girl Tree; the Jamie Oliver School Dinner Tree and the beautifully decorated traditional Christmas Tree surrounded with Christmas goodies, the guests were able to select which tree appealed to them most and bid accordingly!
Following the Fashion Show, ten items were selected from the Silent Auction to be taken to the “Live” Auction. We extend further thanks to Edmund and Shukor from Eastern Carpets in encouraging the generosity of the guests in bidding for those selected items. |
|
Finally, this was a fantastic team effort with helpers from all parts of the Tanglin Community.
Our thanks go to:
-
The Music Department and the Chamber Choir
-
All the Senior School students and parents who took part in the Fashion Show
-
and all the parents and friends who worked tirelessly backstage, not just on the night but in the weeks leading up to the event
-
All the Christmas Tree Coordinators for putting the trees together
-
All the parents, teachers and sponsors who donated gifts and money for the Christmas Trees and other Auction items
|
|
- All the Senior school students who served the food on the evening
- All the parents who came along to help decorate the hall
- All the support staff who helped set up the GJ Hall and did
- All the fetching and carrying necessary for the event to take place, stayed and helped throughout the event and were the last to leave after clearing up!
And not forgetting a huge thank you to everybody who attended and supported the event!

QUIZ NIGHT REPORT
On Friday, 10th November just under 300 parents, teachers, governors and management team entered through a pathway of twinkling diyas and past the most beautiful and intricate rangoli into the Griffith-Jones Hall to find that this too had been decorated with more diyas, Indian trays, garlands ofaromatic jasmine, rose petals and brightly coloured chair ties. All this was the setting for the PTA Bollywood themed Quiz Night. |

|
| But the guests arriving were not to be out-done by the decor, they too were beautifully attired in Indian dress, complete with turbans and curly-toed shoes, henna'dhands and bindis. |
While Bollywood disco music played in the background the 29 teams racked their brains and furrowed their brows to answer questions in 10 rounds of challenging questions with an interlude to enjoy a splendid banquet provided by our generous sponsors The Chutney Cafe while quenching their thirst with Kingfisher beer. |
|
Everybody had such a brilliant time that there were no losers - however, the official winners were the Bombay Ducks team and the winners of the best-dressed team were the Indian Tigers team. In both categories there was extremely close competition, so our congratulations to both teams. |
|
We are indebted to Rajul Patel of The Chutney Cafe for her extremely generous support of the event, to Anu Kankipati who created the beautiful rangoli at the entrance to the Griffith-Jones Hall and to Rachna Sawnhey for her assistance in the design and shopping for the decoration of the G-J Hall - a wonderful team of volunteers who did us proud! Our very grateful thanks also to everybody else that helped set up the hall, and during the event and also at clear up time. |

Book And Gift Fair
This year’s PTA Book and Gift Fair was held on Friday, 17th November and was visited by over 700 parents and most of the students in the school. |
|
The children delighted in choosing books from five different book companies while parents shopped for Christmas presents from 27 vendors and 6 different charity tables. |
|
We would like to thank the Music Department who, once again, arranged a delightful and varied musical programme that gave visitors to the Book and Gift Fair the opportunity to hear from all the different Musical Ensembles from all three schools. |
|
Once again, we are indebted to all the parents who volunteered to help either by serving tea and coffee throughout the day or by baking mince pies that were served free of charge to all visitors who purchased a tea or coffee! |
|
Huge thanks to Harriet Martin who did a magnificent job managing, administering and generally looking after all the Gift and Charity Vendors at the Fair.
Judging from the crowds that visited the fair throughout the day and the feedback from the book companies, all the vendors and visitors, the Book and Gift Fair was once again an unqualified success! |
