Music

At Tanglin, enriching musical education is a key component of the curriculum from Nursery (the Foundation Stage) through to the completion of Year 9 (Key Stage 3). Music or music technology can also be studied as an optional subject from the commencement of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) courses in Year 10 (Key Stage 4) through to Sixth Form (Key Stage 5).
A central principle behind the teaching of the subject is opportunity and experience for all. Our line-up of talented music specialists strives to produce work of the highest quality while fostering a deep appreciation and love of a wide variety of musical styles.

In addition to class work, our Music Department also runs a broad range of instrumental ensembles, orchestras and choirs, enabling students to perform with their peers. The work they do is supported by visiting instrumental tutors, who deliver private lessons on site.

Tanglin students have performed classical pieces at some of Singapore’s most prestigious venues, our Rock and Jazz Bands display their talents at social functions, while those who play in our traditional Indonesian Gamelan Orchestra produce rhythmic tunes from under our Indonesian bale.

The full list of musical groups run at Tanglin is comprehensive and typically includes:

  • Infant School - The Year 2 Choir, Infant Band, Infant Strings, Infant Recorder Groups, and Infant School Orchestra.

  • Junior School – The Junior Chorus, Junior Choir, Junior Keyboard Ensemble, Beginners’ Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra, Junior Strings, Junior Gamelan Orchestra, Junior Flute Ensemble, Junior Recorder Ensembles (Beginners to Advanced), Early Music Consort, Junior Angklung Ensemble, Steel Band, and Junior Jazz band.

A member of the Music staff also organises and leads the Tanglin Camerata, which is an adult choir for friends and family members of students at the School.

Major musical performances, directed by a specialist and mounted with the support of class teachers, are staged at many levels throughout the School calendar. The annual Tanglin Concert showcases Tanglin’s musical achievement. Our Festival of Music is a seasonal concert held at the end of term 1 at St. George’s Church.

Other performances include:

  • Term 1 - concerts for students in Nursery, Year 1, and Year 2, as well as a Senior School Soloists’ Concert.

  • Term 2 – a Senior Ensembles’ Concert, combined Year 3 and 4 concerts, and combined Year 5 and 6 concerts.

  • Term 3 - Reception Concerts and a Primary Ensembles’ Concert.

Additional concerts are also arranged each term to give opportunities for individuals, ensembles and choirs to display achievements in performance. Our lunchtime concerts also provide performance opportunities in informal settings for individuals and small chamber ensembles.
