At Tanglin, opportunities abound for the exploration, development and refinement of musical expression. Enriching musical education is a key component of the curriculum from Nursery (the Foundation Stage) through to the completion of Year 9 (Key Stage 3). Music or music technology can also be studied as an optional subject from the commencement of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) courses in Year 10 (Key Stage 4) through to Sixth Form (Key Stage 5).
A central principle behind the teaching of the subject is opportunity and experience for all. Our line-up of talented music specialists strives to produce work of the highest quality while fostering a deep appreciation and love of a wide variety of musical styles. In addition to class work, our Music Department also runs a broad range of instrumental ensembles, orchestras and choirs, enabling students to perform with their peers. The work they do is supported by visiting instrumental tutors, who deliver private lessons on site. Further details on tuition by visiting music tutors are available from the Music Department.
The full list of musical groups run at Tanglin is comprehensive as the list below shows. Major musical performances, directed by a specialist and mounted with the support of class teachers, are staged at many levels throughout the School calendar. The annual Tanglin Concert showcases Tanglin's musical achievement. Our Festival of Music is a seasonal concert held at the end of term 1 at St. George's Church.
Additional concerts are also arranged each term to give opportunities for individuals, ensembles and choirs to display achievements in performance. Our lunchtime concerts also provide performance opportunities in informal settings for individuals and small chamber ensembles.

Art

Art & design is taught by subject specialists in the Senior School and by class teachers and the Head of Primary Art in our Junior and Infant Schools. All students, from those in the Nursery through to those in Year 9 (Key Stage 3), have the opportunity to experiment, explore, use varied techniques and materials and develop, build and refine skills in art & design. The benefits to our students of such broad-based participation in art & design can be seen in the proud looks on the faces of our students as they present works ranging from decorated pirate hats to paintings inspired by the Old Masters
With the commencement of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) courses in Year 10 (Key Stage 4), art becomes an elective subject and is taught through to the Sixth Form (Key Stage 5).
Key stages 1 & 2
At Key Stage 1 and 2 Art and design is taught by class teachers, with a focus on cross curricular links, wherever possible. Artist studies are incorporated into the art programmes across both schools. In addition, the Head of Art and design runs projects and residencies throughout the year, working on a rolling programme with all year groups.
There is a dedicated Art Room/Ceramics Studio and kiln, used by all Junior students.
The Art and design curriculum relates to the student's own experiences, embracing the rich cultural region in which they live.
Key Stages 3 , 4 & 5
Tanglin Trust School's commitment to Art & Design, from the earliest stages of education through to the moment the A level students embark to University, can be seen easily by walking through the school, where students' work is hung in galleries, halls and walls.
This commitment is exemplified in the piece of work to the right which is just one of the giant 'collages' of prints selected from the full age range of Tanglin students. It is displayed in Tanglin's own art gallery - Gallery@level 3. This stunning space is a regular venue for exhibitions, sometimes by guest artists.
Drama

Drama at Tanglin is taught by subject specialists in both the Junior and Senior School. Through role play, storytelling and play making students in the Junior School explore a range of personal and social topics; develop creativity and imagination as well as a range of social, verbal and physical skills.
In the Senior School, students learn about the art of drama and theatre, its history and the many practices around the world. Students also learn how to manipulate the art form for themselves, creating original drama and exploring play texts, as well as using drama techniques to explore a variety of issues and topics. Drama develops intellectual, imaginative and practical skills, as well as helping students to work both collaboratively and independently.
All students in Key Stage 3 study Drama once a week. Over the course of the three years, all students will have the opportunity to experience exploratory techniques, scripted performance, improvisation, ensemble techniques, and performing for audiences. They will explore theatre from around the world as well as issues relating to the society in which they live.
Students may opt for GCSE Drama in Year 10. A variety of drama techniques and conventions are used to explore issues and develop devised drama as well as play texts for performance. Students are assessed on their practical work in class as well as on their written evaluations of their own work and the work of others. Students are also assessed on exploratory workshops and a final performance: based either on their acting or their contribution to a technical element of the performance such as lighting or sound.
In the Sixth Form, students may opt for either A Level Drama or IB Theatre, depending on the program most suited to the individual student. Students in both courses undertake ensemble work; explore practices from around the world; develop skills in creating, performing, directing and producing theatre as well as polish their critical and analytical skills.
