Individual 60m/100m/600m
-
Team 4x100m Relay/12x50m Shuttle Relay
Field
- Throwing - Tee Ball/Quoit Sling/Chest Pass
- Jumping - Long Jump /High Jump
All events will take place at the Yio Chu Kang Athletics Stadium
Medals will be awarded in all events, for 1st/2nd/3rd place
Rationale
- The events are designed to enable children to take part in the various disciplines of throwing/jumping/running and recognize that this is part of a multi-sports competition which may involve children with limited ability in some events.
- All events should be standardised across all 3 age groups to allow progression in the various techniques. i.e., there will be no triple jump or shot putt for Year 6. This will also allow records to be established and followed.
- Events should be using formats which will help develop the basic skills & techniques used in the full athletics programme, which begins at U13 FOBISSEA athletics. i.e. 600m rather than 800m (which is a senior race distance).
- These formats should be suitable for all primary aged children and take into consideration that some schools may not have specialist staff, facilities, or equipment to teach some of the more technical events whilst guaranteeing the highest levels of health & safety for our children.
Guidelines
Track
All track events will take place on a synthetic 400m track. All event distances and formats are reduced versions of a KS3/4 programme and intended to develop primary children for those distances and race formats for the future. There will be no differentiation between distances for Years 4-6.
Short Sprint – 60m
Runners start & finish on the home straight. All races run in lanes.
Long Sprint – 100m
Runners start & finish on the home straight. All races run in lanes.
Middle Distance – 600m
Runners start on an arc and may break from lanes after the first 25m on the first bend – this will be clearly marked and marshalled – Runners then complete 1.5 laps of the track.
4x100m Relay
Teams complete one lap of the track. For each of the three changeovers, there will be a 15m box clearly marked and marshaled. Teams will not be disqualified for dropping the baton. Disqualifications will only occur if another team has been clearly impeded by another runner stepping in their lane, or clearly gains an unfair advantage by handing over the baton too early and/or late which leads to the final placing in a race.
12x50m Shuttle Relay
All children from each year group take part, with 6 runners at each end of the 50m course, marked with a rounders post. Runners must wait behind the line of the post until they are handed the baton by the incoming runner. If an early changeover results in a clear advantage which affects medal position at the end of the race, the team order may be altered accordingly. Teams will not be disqualified for dropping the baton.
Field
Throwing Events
All events will take place on grass and will consist of the best of three measured throws
Tee Ball Throw (Designed as a precursor of the javelin throw technique)
All throws are taken within a 6m long throwing “funnel” with a 45 degree throwing arc in front. All throwers will use a 10 inch tee ball and use one hand to throw the ball from within the box. Throwers may use a run up if they choose, but this must be within the 6m allowed and their momentum may not take them outside this box even after the ball has been released. All Throwers must exit from behind the front line of the box.
Quoit Sling (Designed as a precursor of the discus throw technique)
The Quoit is a round object which is made of dense rubber. It is thrown from a discus circle 2.5m in diameter and throwers must enter and exit from the rear half of the circle. Throwers can start from any part of the circle and travel across the circle with the coit, but must not step out of the front of the circle, even after releasing the coit. The Quoit must be thrown with one hand and in a forehand manner (not like a frisbee).
Push Pass (Designed as a precursor of the shot putt technique)
The ball must be “pushed” from within a shot putt circle. The thrower can start from any point within the circle and can move across the circle with the ball, but may not step on the circle or outside the front of the circle, even after releasing the ball. A size 5 basketball is used and must be initially held in two hands, touching the chest until the ball is pushed in a single action from the chest. The ball can ultimately be propelled from one or two hands as long as the ball begins in two. (Children may jump during the process as long as the other guidelines are followed).
Jumping Events
High Jump
Each competitor will attempt a maximum of 7 jumps in total. If there are 3 consecutive failures at a particular height, the jumper will be eliminated from the competition. There will be starting height set for each competitor based on the warm up jump of each competitor. The bar will be raised in 5cm increments, until all jumpers have been eliminated, or have taken all 7 jumps. If one or more jumpers finish the competition on the same height, then “count back” of failed attempts will determine the final placing. It is our aim that all jumpers obtain some measure of success in the competition and their opening height will reflect this. Two footed take offs will be deemed a “no jump”.
Long Jump
Each competitor will have three measured jumps. All jumps will be made into sand, from a gravel runway, using a one footed takeoff.
Triple Springs
Each jumper will have three measured triple spring jumps. All jumps will be made on the long jump run up. Each triple spring shall consist of 3 fluid jumping movements in one rhythmical action using 2 feet together throughout. A triple spring will be deemed a “no jump” if any of the following occur:
- The jumper’s feet move from the landing spot in between springs.
- The jumper pauses in between springs to prepare for the next spring.
