Placement Rights

In January 2008 Tanglin Trust School launched a programme of Placement Rights, designed to offer accelerated access to a small percentage of places in exchange for a significant contribution to the school.

Two forms of Placement Rights are available:
1) Guaranteed Placement Right: offers a guaranteed place at the school (For terms and conditions, click here)
2) Standard Placement Right: places the nominee at the top of the relevant waiting list. For terms and conditions, click here

In both cases, prospective applicants (corporate or individual) must meet with the schools normal admissions criteria. More detailed information on each option is available below. A limited number of Placement Rights will be available and they will be sold on a first come first served basis. For further information please contact our Admissions Department on (65) 6778 0771.

Guaranteed Placement Rights (GPR's)

A Guaranteed Placement Right will act as an instrument to guarantee the place of a student into the school. The general terms and conditions of a GPR are outlined below:

Price S$165,000*
Term 7 years
Priority A GPR will enable a student to a guaranteed place at TTS subject only to TTS's assessment procedure. A GPR will rank behind staff but in front of all other applicants.
Automatic Conversion Once a child has been nominated to use the GPR, the GPR will be converted to a SPR for the remaining term.
Transferability The GPR's can be transferred to a child of another employee of the same company, upon the nomination by the company of that child, but will be transferred over as a SPR.
Trading
GPR's are not tradeable on the open market, nor can they be sold back to the school. Upon expiry, or end use they will lapse.
Conditions A Sibling of a GPR will need to be covered by his/her own GPR to gain the same special priority conditions, otherwise he/she will not obtain sibling priority.

Standard Placement Rights (SPR's)

A Standard Placement Right will act as an instrument to accelerate the place of a student onto the waiting list into a higher priority group. The general terms and conditions of a SPR are outlined below:

Price S$85,000*
Term 7 years
Priority An SPR will enable a student to accelerate into a higher priority group on the waitlist. An SPR will rank behind staff and Guaranteed Placement Rights (GPR's) but in front of all other applicants.
Transferability SPR's can be transferred to a child of another employee of the same company, upon the nomination by the company of that child.
Trading SPR's are not tradeable on the open market, nor can they be sold back to the school. Upon expiry, or end use they will lapse.
Conditions

A sibling of a SPR will need to be covered by his/her own SPR to gain the same special priority conditions, otherwise sibling priority will not apply.

What are Placement Rights?

Placement Rights are admission instruments designed to offer accelerated access to a small number of places in exchange for a significant financial contribution to the school.

Who can buy them?

Anyone can buy them, but we anticipate most demand to come from companies who are looking to relocate families with children and who are finding it difficult to secure places at Tanglin because of long waiting lists for most year groups. Many families are unwilling to commit to a move to Singapore without knowing their children's education is secure.

How much do they cost and what are the entitlements?

We offer 2 levels of Placement Rights: a Guaranteed Placement Right costs S$165,000 and offers a guaranteed place at the school and a Standard Placement Right costs S$85,000 for 2009 intake and places the nominee at the top of the relevant waiting list.

How will this affect my child's place on the waiting list?

Due to the high turnover we experience in our student population at Tanglin, we anticipate continued movement on our waiting lists. However it is true that holders of Placement Rights will have priority over others. If your child's name is low down on the list and you have been told you face a long wait for a place, you now have the option to buy a Placement Right to secure that place.

I already have one child at Tanglin. How does this affect their sibling's chances of gaining a place in the school?

Siblings on the waiting list receive priority after Staff and Placement Right holders, regardless of their date of application, once their sibling in the school has been a student at Tanglin for at least one term.

Why is Tanglin doing this now?

As we are all aware Singapore is booming, with the demand for school places unprecedented. At Tanglin we have ambitious plans not only to meet that demand but to ensure we maintain and improve the quality of what we offer. By using Placement Rights as a method of fund raising, offering a relatively small number of places to a selected group of investors, everyone in the school will benefit from significantly enhanced facilities without having to pay through major fee increases.

Why does Tanglin need to raise more funds?

At present we rely solely on school fees as a source of income. Whilst Tanglin remains a not-for-profit organisation, Placement Rights will present the school with an additional source of revenue, which can be used to finance the plans which are in place to develop and improve the current site and the facilities on offer, as well as the extension on the leasehold on the schools current location at Portsdown Road.

Does this mean the fees will decrease?

No. Fees cover our operating costs at the school, and the building fund covers the cost of repair and maintenance to our existing buildings. This additional source of revenue will be used to finance additional requirements.

Will Placement Rights improve quality?

Yes. As we have explained, the money raised from their introduction will benefit everyone. In the pipeline are plans to further develop world class facilities and build a new state-of-the-art sixth-form centre, additional sporting facilities, specialist classroom facilities and new refectories.

How will the introduction of Placement Rights affect our current students?

In a positive way, enabling them to benefit from the enhanced facilities we will be able to offer as a result.
