Student leaders

Students in Tanglin’s Junior School (Year 3 to Year 6) are presented with a wide range of leadership opportunities.

Every class in the Junior School elects one boy and one girl as a Class Representative to participate in the Year Group Student Council. Class Representatives are issued with a badge of office and take part in regular meetings with members of staff.

One boy and one girl from the Year Group Student Council are elected by the group to be Year Group or Unit Representative and to sit on the Junior School Student Council. Unit or Year Group Representatives are also issued with badges and meet regularly with the Head of the Infant School.

Students in Years 5 and 6 can also participate in Tanglin’s Junior Listener and Student Librarian Programmes. Those wishing to be trained to become a Student Librarian must apply in writing and complete the modular course before being issued their badge and commencing work in the Library. Students can apply to be trained at any time throughout the year.

Students participating in the Junior Listening Programme are usually recommended by members of staff and they are trained by a School Counsellor to act as “listening posts” and help solve issues in the classroom or playground.

Year 6 students can also apply to become Lunch-Time Helpers and to take on a leadership role within the Junior School’s House System. Students wishing to help with serving meals in the canteen or to assist young students can apply to the School’s Food Administrator.

There are four houses in the Junior School representing four animals. The names of the houses are the Malay words for the respective animals – Beruang (Bear), Elang, (Eagle), Harimau (Tiger) and Singa (Lion). Students from Year 6 can nominate themselves for the position of House Captain.

One male and one female House Captain and one male and one female Vice Captain are chosen for each house by the respective Heads of House, each of whom is a teacher in the Junior School. These student leaders are given badges of office and actively assist the Head of House in organising events.
