Years 8 and 9 performed extracts from Nigel Williams’ adaptation of William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” in H3 Studio on Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th November.

The central concern in Golding’s novel is the conflict between the two competing impulses that exist within human beings: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully and follow moral strictures as opposed to the all consuming desire for immediate and savage gratification brought about through the violent subjugation of others. This conflict is explored through the dissolution of the children’s civilized and moral behaviour as they accustom themselves to a wild, brutal and barbaric life in the jungle on a remote tropical island.

For Golding, this loss of innocence is not something which is done to the children, but is rather the natural result of innate evil, and the bloody offering to “the beast’ of the impaled pig’s head is a powerful symbol of that innate human evil disrupting childhood innocence.

Wesex Charity Week 15th 19th October

This week, it was Wessex’ turn to organise a variety of events and activities in aid of our chosen charity, which is ActionAid (www.actionaid.org.uk). Last year, students set the bar high when they raised over $3500. This money meant that we were able to sponsor a little girl called Tulasha in Nepal for over 6 years. This year, we wanted to add to that amount to allow us to continue to sponsor Tulasha, even when our current year 7 students are off to university!

The successful video and popcorn lunch often had rooms filled to the brim, teachers were being sponged and had all sorts of “pie-like concoctions” thrown at them, we had plenty of drinks and cakes to keep our spirits high, people were sent to “prison”, hands were covered in shaving cream for a lucky dip and much more!

Some students even managed to stay silent for a whole day as part of their sponsored silence and this was quite a feat! It has been amazing to see so many of the Wessex students get involved so a special thanks goes out to them for being so fabulous, even when most are probably exhausted after a hectic 7 weeks!
