Technology
The use of technology to support learning is embedded across the Senior School curriculum and supported by the Technology for Learning team.
Our goal is to inspire and support teachers to explore and innovate with technology to get the maximum benefit from available tools. This means providing personalised professional development and practice-sharing opportunities for individual teachers, small groups and whole subject teams, so that all teachers continue to add to their repertoire and all students enjoy an increasingly integrated experience of technology in learning. It is equally our task to take the lead in ensuring teachers and students also know how to apply these skills safely and ethically, and to develop opportunities for student leadership wherever possible.
Students in Years 7 to 9 receive specific Computing lessons, where they increase their skills as users of key software packages as well as developing an understanding of the principles of computer science and programming. All classes automatically have a Microsoft Team and associated OneNote notebook created for teachers and students to share resources, communicate and collaborate as part of their learning journey.
Within each group, the students can access information posted by their teachers, receive and submit assignments, and ask or answer questions/comments from their teacher or classmates. Microsoft Teams also proved to be an invaluable tool while lockdowns were imposed due to the COVID pandemic, allowing teachers to conduct live online lessons and monitor student progress when face to face teaching was suspended. In classrooms, teaching and learning takes place through pen-enable devices and each classroom has a range of technology including interactive whiteboards.
All students are required to have their own personal pen-enabled device (iPad or Windows pen-enabled device) which they use at home and at school. This mobile technology is used to support learning and stay organised.
Our students and teachers have access to a range of appropriate technologies with which we interact inside and outside the classroom. These interactions help prepare students to deal with the ever-growing role of technology in their lives both at Tanglin and beyond.
Device Requirements
Year 7 to Year 13
All students must have a pen-enabled device, not a MacBook or gaming laptop. Students can continue using an iPad, similar to those used in Year 6, but with the addition of a keyboard and Apple pencil. At any point in the Senior School, students can start using a Windows 11 pen-enabled device (e.g. the Microsoft Surface Pro) with keyboard and stylus. It is advised students with additional learning needs use a Windows 11 device to have full access to the suite of Microsoft Learning Accelerator tools to better support their learning.
A range of iPads are available from Apple to suit a wide variety of budgets. They can be purchased with either an Apple or 3rd party keyboard and stylus. There are many manufacturers of Windows 11 pen-enabled devices, several of which offer student discounts, that can be purchased directly from their website or through an electronics store.
Students should install Microsoft Teams, OneNote and Outlook onto their devices before their first day at school.
