Nurturing Growth and the Love of Reading in the New Junior Library & Story House

We have been delighted to welcome children and parents into the newly opened Junior Library and Story House in the Junior Arts Centre. This space encourages a sense of belonging, where all our children may flourish, providing opportunities for both academic growth and wellbeing.

At the recent launch of the Junior Arts Centre, ten finalists of the House Poetry Shield performed their poems following a workshop with performance artist Rebecca Siar of Singapore Repertory Theatre.

This week, the Library welcomed illustrator Chaaya Prabhat. Her visit was made possible by the Tanglin Trust School Foundation, thanks to the generous support of our community. Chaaya is an award-winning graphic designer and illustrator who has illustrated numerous science books, ranging from the animal kingdom to the solar system. Most recently, she created the illustrations for the Red Dot shortlisted Glitter Everywhere by Chris Barton, a work that explores the environmental impact of glitter.

During her visit, Chaaya offered students an engaging insight into the process of book illustration, sharing her artistic journey, and they participated in live drawing workshops. Several students demonstrated their confidence by reading aloud from Chaaya’s books, with a microphone in hand. To commemorate the occasion, Chaaya gifted each class an original illustration. In addition to her workshops, she produced bespoke artwork for the non-fiction collection that celebrates science in Singapore.

As one reading initiative comes to a close, another opens with the launch of the Red Dot Award 2026. Chaaya introduced the Younger Category shortlist this week, featuring Glitter Everywhere, whilst author Kyla Zhao will present the Older Category shortlist online this week, which features her recent title, May the Best Player Win. The Red Dot Award is an annual initiative across Singapore International Schools that celebrates excellence in recently published children’s literature.
