Improving things one voice at a time

TEDxTanglinTrustSchool may be in its seventh year but this year’s line-up of speakers was still “a step in the right direction”. One of them was Year 9 student Kimi and her take on gender equality. She said, “I decided to join the speaking competition because I felt it was an amazing opportunity! I not only got to express my thoughts on what was a step in the right direction, I also got a chance to speak in front of a large audience. I learned how to speak confidently and use body language to communicate that confidence. I feel that it’s an essential life skill to have.”

What inspired you to speak about gender equality?
My topic was inspired by the fact that I have been treated unfairly due to my gender from a young age. We see it every day, from different dress codes for boys and girls to being told to leave certain tasks like lifting heavy objects to the boys. I feel that this unfair treatment should stop with me and the only way I can change things is to get my voice heard.

What was it like to speak during TEDxTanglinTrustSchool?
It was amazing! I felt thoroughly supported throughout the process, and I felt that I was fully prepared when the day of the talk finally arrived. I loved discussing my ideas with my peers and receiving feedback from both teachers and students. I definitely feel that I’m a more confident speaker after my experience.

Any challenges or memorable moments?
I had to ensure that my speech was captivating and interesting by learning how to moderate my tone and volume of voice as well as the way I stand on stage. That was the challenging part. But I do have some memorable moments and they were definitely right before the actual event. All the student speakers were nervously pacing while rehearsing our speeches. Everyone was so supportive and it felt like we were all in it together.
