Now in its second year, the ‘Tanglin Thrift’ has quickly become one of the most anticipated events on the Senior School calendar. This student-led sustainability initiative, organised by Year 12 students with the assistance of Year 7 and upwards, encourages the Tanglin community to donate old clothes, and in doing so reduce landfill, give pre-loved clothes a second life whilst raising money for a good cause.
Aaliyan, a committee member for this year’s Tanglin Thrift, explains the importance of such small sustainable initiatives, highlighting their potential for significant impact.
‘The aim of the Tanglin Thrift is to encourage long-term sustainable values within the school community. Volunteers from across different year groups came together, united by their concern for the environment and their desire to make a difference. Everyone had a role to play, from placing collection boxes around the school to marketing the event and folding clothes during the sale.
After months of planning, the event day arrived and was a resounding success. Many clothes were donated, prices were set at affordable levels while still being profitable, before the students rushed through the doors to get first pick of the clothes!
The event raised $530 for ‘It’s Raining Raincoats,’ a non-profit organisation that provides support and essential items to migrant workers in Singapore, contributing to their overall welfare. The Tanglin Thrift also raised awareness of the benefits of recycling clothing and how it helps reduce waste on the planet, as well as going home with a brand new outfit!’
Looking ahead, the Year 12 team plans to organise a House competition to utilise some of the remaining clothes and collaborate with other organisations in Singapore, to further raise awareness about the sustainability issues related to 'fast fashion'.
