The Sustainability Dialogue 2025

Earlier this academic year, our Environment and Sustainability Lead Student, along with four Year 13 students, attended "The Sustainability Dialogue" organised by the British Chamber of Commerce. The event was an inspiring and pivotal experience that allowed them to engage with industry leaders and connect with students from schools across Singapore. Year 13 student and Sustainability Lead Libby P shares more with us.

The day began with opening remarks and a keynote address by Lucy Hughes, the British Deputy High Commissioner, followed by presentations and policy discussions. Throughout the day, students were able to network extensively, discuss their future career plans, and gain insights from professionals in the field. They attended two major presentations: “Rethinking Sustainability” and a discussion on corporate carbon and climate responsibility featuring guest speakers.

Students also had the opportunity to engage with businesses that had released sustainable products, ranging from plant-based iced coffees to an eco-friendly sidecar. The highlight of the day, however, was the facilitated focus groups, which explored a wide range of sustainability topics, from biodiversity and nature to energy transition and sustainable aviation. Each student was assigned a mentor and took notes on their group’s discussion, concluding with a short presentation to the rest of the room. The event organisers praised the students, saying, "It was great to see our future generation engaging with the business community."

The day concluded with a spotlight talk from Ravi Menon, Singapore's first Ambassador for Climate Action and Senior Advisor to the National Climate Change Secretariat at the Prime Minister’s Office. His inspiring talk showcased his passion and plans for future international collaboration. Overall, the event was an unforgettable experience, sparking and solidifying students’ interests in sustainability, and we look forward to attending next year’s event.

Here is what our students have to say about their experience:

“Attending the Sustainability Dialogue was an eye-opening experience. Being one of the youngest in a room full of business leaders and policymakers, I learned how much progress is being made in turning sustainability promises into action. Hearing Ravi Menon speak about accountability and inclusive change really inspired me, and it made me want to apply these ideas to our school's sustainability projects. Honestly, one of my favourite events that Tanglin has provided me with the opportunity to attend.”

"I really enjoyed attending The Sustainability Dialogue. A top highlight of mine was the focus group presentations. I had the opportunity to explore the concept of "just transitions" alongside experts from different sectors. Our discussions highlighted that whilst we hope to transition into a greener economy, it is important to not leave anyone behind and account for all stakeholders involved. With valuable inputs from everyone, I saw how sustainability intersects and connects with a variety of different industries, and how this is crucial in creating a more sustainable future."
