Class of 2022: The Next Chapter (Amelia D.)

The best part about closing a chapter is the beginning of a new one. What's next for our Class of 2022? Here is Amelia D.'s story.

Why IB?
I took IB because I enjoyed most of my subjects in GCSE and would've found it hard to pick just three subjects for A levels. I was also uncertain of what I would do after Sixth Form, so I thought IB would give me more flexibility there.

What subjects did you take for IB?
My Higher Level (HL) subjects were History, English Literature and Visual Arts. My Standard Level (SL) subjects were Physics, French (Language B) and Maths AA.

Which subjects did you enjoy the most and why?
I enjoyed my HL subjects a lot more as they tended to be the subjects I was better at. I found my SL subjects challenging and ended up spending more time on them!

What is your secret to scoring a perfect 45 points for the IB?
I would say don't think about achieving a certain result from the start, as it will probably stress you out. Take it day by day. Pay attention in class, and ask your teachers for help when you need it.

What's your next destination and why?
My next destination is university. I will be studying History at Oxford.

What are your career aspirations?
I will be taking the necessary steps to ensure World Peace.

What would you like to do five years from now?
Who knows...something good hopefully.

Tell us about your time at Tanglin. What were some memorable moments?
I'll never forget when our GCSEs were cancelled and everyone was running around the school trying to get past papers.

Is there a teacher you'd like to specially mention?
I don't have favourites...all my teachers at Tanglin were wonderful, especially in Sixth Form. I'm very grateful and would like to thank all of them for their time spent teaching me.

What advice would you give younger students when it comes to making a choice between A Levels and the IB curriculum?
The IB workload is quite intense and you have more lessons than people who take three A levels subjects. If you pick IB, make sure that your SLs take up less time than your HLs. I would also say do some research before picking IB (I had no idea what IAs, CAS, TOK, EE were before I picked it). It is quite tough sometimes, but at the same time, I would choose it again if I had to go back two years. Talk to the university counsellors if you are uncertain as they are experts and can guide you through your choice. Good luck :)
