The best part about closing a chapter is the beginning of a new one. What's next for our Class of 2022? Here is Rahul A's story.
Why IB?
I chose to do the IB diploma as it gave me the opportunity to study subjects I was interested in, such as Chinese and Economics, at a standard level while doing others at a higher level. This helped me stay very well-rounded and gave me the chance to improve on a variety of skills.
Which subjects did you enjoy the most and why?
Biology was definitely the subject I enjoyed most. This was because I really enjoyed the teaching style utilised by my teacher, Mrs Mackenzie. She incorporated real-life examples of medical practices, recent biological research, and taught key concepts and processes in a very clear manner. The subject also links to what I want to pursue in the future, a career in Medicine.
You scored 45 points for your IB, how did you do it?
I think the reason I was able to score so well was due to all the support I had from friends, family and teachers especially! Utilising after school study sessions and help from teachers was very beneficial. Overall, I think it's vital to keep determined and consistent throughout the two years. But it's just as important to keep a healthy balance between work and life. I think maintaining this balance is what really helped me stay consistent.
What's your next destination and why?
I'll be serving my National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces and after that I hope to be studying Medicine in the UK or Australia.
What are your career aspirations?
I have had a passion for the medical sciences, especially oncology, for many years now and hope that one day I will be able to contribute to the care and treatment of cancer patients.
What would you like to do five years from now?
I'd love to be in Medical School studying to become a doctor!
Tell us about your time at Tanglin. What were some memorable moments?
I've been at Tanglin since Nursery, and there have been so many memorable moments. I think one moment I will never forget is walking around the school during the Graduation Parade with my friends, some of whom I have known since I joined Tanglin. It was a really nice way to say goodbye to my time at Tanglin.
Is there a teacher you'd like to specially mention?
My form tutor, Rosemary Leusner, definitely deserves a special mention. Even though she was not one of my subject teachers, the amount of support and kindness she gave to our Form group was so commendable. She was always there for us and really helped us all in times of need. Thank you Ms Leusner!
What advice would you give younger students when it comes to making a choice between A Levels and the IB curriculum?
The two curricula are very different. It is important you talk to your teachers about how they differ subject-wise. It is also important to consider your future aspirations and whether you already know what course you want to pursue at University. If you do, A levels may be a better choice for you. However, I feel that the IB diploma really gives you a more well-rounded, holistic education.
