The Class of 2025 has worked hard at getting into the university of their choice. Here's Jack's story.

What is your Tanglin story?
I started at Tanglin in Nursery. My parents explored several international schools before deciding on Tanglin, as it offered the strongest support and opportunities, especially for students with learning differences. I was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder and had a significant speech impediment. It took about 7 to 8 years of speech therapy from Nursery through Year 5 or 6, along with external support, for me to develop clear speech. These early learning challenges have had a lasting impact on my educational journey. They’ve motivated me to work even harder to keep up with my peers. Overcoming these difficulties has shaped my resilience and determination in the pursuit of knowledge.

Why the London School of Economics and Political Science?
I’ve wanted to go to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) since last year when I had the luxury to visit the university on open day. I got an opportunity to walk around the advanced campus and I met the lead tutor of my course, who had a very impressive background working with the World Bank, United Nations, and more. Additionally, I was interested in the chance to potentially do a year abroad at different universities around the world, including UC Berkeley, Tokyo University, British Columbia Canada, and Bocconi Italy.

What did you think scored you the opportunity at this institution?
I think it was a combination of three things:

  • My predicted A Level grades in Maths, Physics, Economics were A*, and I received mostly grades 7-9 in my GCSEs.
  • My personal statement highlighted a wide range of extracurriculars.
  • My teachers’ recommendations, especially for Economics, added significant value to my application by covering achievements that didn’t fit into my personal statement.

Is this your first choice? What were your other choices and why?
I’ve always tried to keep an open mind and avoid having just one fixed preference. But after visiting Oxford and LSE, they quickly became the two front-runners in my mind. After some thinking, I decided on LSE because I wanted to live in a metropolitan city.

Is there anything you wish you could have done differently?
For the most part, no. However, one thing I would do differently is to enjoy the moment a bit more, which is something that I intend to do more of during my time in university.
