What made you choose the IB instead of A Levels, and how did you decide which subjects to take?

I chose the IB as I liked how you can continue a range of subjects, but also really zoom into your individual areas of interest through the internal assessments and extended essay. At Higher Level, I took Economics, Global Politics, and Environmental Systems and Societies, as I have always enjoyed the humanities and social sciences. I also found that these subjects complemented each other extremely well, encouraging me to think in an interdisciplinary way when tackling my extended essay on haze pollution in Southeast Asia.

At Standard Level, I studied Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, English Literature and French. I'm also very pleased to have continued studying French throughout Senior School and can now say that I am (almost) fluent!

Why University of Southern California Marshall School of Business? What factors influenced your decision?

USC is uniquely attractive in its real estate finance and development course, combining courses from the Marshall School of Business and the Price School of Public Policy. Situated in the heart of LA, one of the world’s most interesting and busiest cities, USC is the perfect place to study real estate finance and immerse myself in the world around me. I’m also extremely keen to experience the US college life, including joining a frat, trying chipotle, and enjoying the California sunshine!

Why did you choose to pursue real estate finance and development, and what interests you most about the subject?

Growing up in Singapore, I have always been fascinated by the city around me and how different neighbourhoods can shape opportunity and outcomes. Throughout Upper School, I particularly enjoyed studying Economics, but I found it even more engaging when the theory could be applied in a tangible, urban context such as real estate. That connection between finance, people and the built environment is what drew me to the subject.

The interdisciplinary nature of the degree also really appeals to me. Rather than focusing solely on finance, it brings together a range of fields, including sustainability, urban planning, law and economics. I enjoy looking at problems from different perspectives, so studying a subject that combines these disciplines feels like a natural fit.

What surprised you most during the university application process? If you could give one piece of advice to students currently applying to universities, what would it be?

It was difficult and, at times, disheartening to receive rejections from Cambridge and several Ivy League universities. Applying to both the UK and the US while keeping on top of coursework and revision can also be challenging. I also would recommend telling someone, like a parent, the deadlines you are facing, so they can help keep you on track and support you during the process.

More generally, I found it helpful to separate my study space from the place where I relax. Whether it's a café, library or study area, having a different environment for work can help you establish a routine, stay focused and make it easier to switch off at the end of the day.

What are you most looking forward to about university life?

Academically I am excited to have more opportunities to explore my interests through specific modules and clubs. Most importantly, I am very excited for college life and everything that comes with it. I am excited for some more freedom and hopefully make some lifelong friends and prepare myself well for life after school.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years' time, I hope to be rich in experiences and memories. Perhaps I will have started a real estate firm with my dad, and be responsible for new sustainable developments and real estate projects.
