Speech and language development is critical for a child's overall development and wellbeing. Education is underpinned by effective communication as these skills are foundational for learning across all subjects, from reading and writing to social interactions and problem-solving. When children can express themselves clearly and understand others, they are more likely to participate confidently, form positive relationships, perform well academically, and thrive as individuals.
Across the school, Speech and Language Development is supported in many ways through our bespoke Tanglin Curriculum. In the Infant School, the focus is on laying the foundation for effective communication through:
Language-rich environments: Our Infant classrooms are designed with plenty of opportunities for children to engage in conversations, listen to stories, and explore language through play.
Phonological awareness: Activities that enhance phonological awareness, such as rhyming games, sound matching, and singing, are used alongside our Read Write Inc. phonics programme to help children develop the skills needed for speaking, reading, and writing.
Storytelling and role play: These activities are embedded within our curriculum to encourage children to use language in creative ways, building their vocabulary and understanding of narrative structures.
In the Junior School, the emphasis shifts to expanding vocabulary and refining communication skills:
Reading and writing integration: Language development is integrated into all subject areas, with a strong focus on reading comprehension and writing skills. Students engage in activities that require them to explain their thinking, describe processes, and present information clearly.
Oral presentations and group work: Students participate in various group activities, projects, and presentations, which helps them practice speaking in front of others, articulating their ideas, and listening to their peers.
Use of technology: Educational software and apps are used to support language learning, offering interactive and engaging ways for students to practice their skills.
In the Senior School, communication and language skills are critical for academic success and future opportunities:
Advanced literacy skills: Students are encouraged to analyse and interpret complex texts, write essays, and engage in debates. These activities help develop higher-order thinking and the ability to express sophisticated ideas clearly.
Critical thinking and argumentation: The curriculum includes opportunities for students to develop their argumentative skills, both in writing and orally, through discussions, debates, and persuasive writing tasks.
Career and life skills: Communication skills are linked to real-world applications, such as university applications, interview preparation, public speaking, and effective communication in professional settings.
Co-curricular activities: Drama clubs, debate teams, and other CCAs provide additional platforms for students to hone their communication skills in a more dynamic environment.
Every learning journey is unique, and at times, additional support is needed along the way. Research shows early identification and intervention in speech and language development can significantly improve academic performance, social skills, and overall wellbeing.
We are therefore thrilled to announce that Tanglin has partnered with Thumbs Up Therapy, an award-winning speech and language therapy practice, to provide onsite support for our students. Thumbs Up Therapy has a strong reputation in Singapore for bridging the gap between children, parents, schools, and therapists. Their holistic, child-centred approach focuses on empowering students to reach their full potential, while actively involving parents and educators in the process. The therapists at Thumbs Up work closely with all professionals in a child’s life, contributing to support strategies across all settings—home, school, and therapy.
Starting this term, experienced speech and language therapists from Thumbs Up will deliver sessions on campus to support our students through personalised, evidence-based therapy that aligns with our students' needs and Tanglin’s educational goals. With this partnership, we aim to make support more accessible and ensure that goals are consistently reinforced throughout the school day. In addition to student support, Thumbs Up Therapy will be offering parent workshops focused on various aspects of speech and language development to equip you with the knowledge and tools to support your child's communication journey at home. Keep an eye out for these through our ParentWise programme.
We are confident that this partnership with Thumbs Up Therapy will greatly enhance the support we provide to our students, helping them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
