Yesterday evening, staff, students, parents and friends of Tanglin were wowed by stunning performances at the Senior Young Musician Finals in the Berrick Performance Hall.
This annual competition is for solo instrumentalists and singers and is largely classical in nature. This year, over 40 students from Year 7-13 auditioned and 16 made it through to the finals. There were two categories – Key Stage 3 students and Key Stage 4/5 students – and a winner was chosen from each category.
The five judges were the two winners from the 2017 competition, two members of staff and a special guest judge, Eshan Denipitiya, a classically trained pianist, composer, arranger and improviser. Eshan has played with the Sri Lankan Symphony Orchestra and toured Australia playing the piano. Most recently, his virtuosic arrangement of a medley of Queen's songs, We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions, garnered over 240,000+ views online and received the attention and praise of Queen's guitarist, Brian May. We were delighted that Eshan played this piece for us during the evening!
The finalists were judged on accuracy, tempo, technique, expression, difficulty level and presentation.
A big well done to all those involved. Many congratulations to winners, Jesse (KS3) on the piano and Anisha (KS4/5) on the harp, who received a trophy and will have their names added to the "Hall of Fame" display in the Music Department.
