Message from Head of Senior School

It is an honour to serve as Head of the Senior School at Tanglin. Every day, I am inspired by the scale, ambition, and spirit of this marvellous community.

Truly great education should be transformational. It should reveal fascinations and exciting challenges in order to unfold possibilities, both intellectual and experiential, which can transform a child’s sense of self, and their sense of the opportunities around them.

In the Senior School years, our young people have achieved a degree of maturity which allows them to refine increasingly the academic and co-curricular avenues which appeal most to them and bring them the greatest transformational satisfaction. Each child progressively discovers their own unique combination of fascinations through which they grow into happy and respectful contributors to their community and to the betterment of society.

Along the way, our robust and nuanced pastoral care network is there to support our young people on those rare occasions when challenges loom a little too large. And whilst inevitably the reality of public examinations exists during the later years of the Senior School, it should always be remembered that examinations and grades are not purpose of education.

Examinations and grades, whilst important, are necessarily transactional; the deep discoveries of education, as said above, are transformational.

I look forward to welcoming you to our community.

Dr Richard Malpass, Head of Senior School
