We aim to foster a love and appreciation of music in all our students. Our curriculum provides opportunities for students of all ages and ability to fulfil their musical potential through challenging and engaging activities.
During focused music lessons in the EYFS, children are introduced to a rich variety of action songs and rhymes as well as simple rhythmic patterns. There is a strong emphasis on movement as well as exploring the vast array of instruments.
With a specialist teacher, all children from Reception upwards learn songs as part of a large group to develop their confidence as a singer. Children also have specialist music lessons which encourages them to develop their musical appreciation and sense of rhythm, as well as developing their compositional skills.
The Junior School has a rich and varied music curriculum which employs a very practical approach incorporating the key elements of performing, composing and listening. All our students learn a string, wind or brass instrument as part of their music programme. Beyond the curriculum, individual instrumental lessons are available to children during the school day, delivered by specialist tutors.
At Senior School, there is an emphasis on practical work which allows students to grow in confidence as they develop their vocal and instrumental skills as well as their communication and collaboration skills. Students develop an understanding and perception of music in relation to time, place and cultures, becoming informed, reflective and critical practitioners.
Students across each school have numerous opportunities to perform as soloists or members of an ensemble throughout the year, both at events in school and also at performances in the community.
